Killing the boss also grants one reward, but many missions will also have bonus objectives to complete for even more loot. It isn’t simply enough to fire your weapons constantly at the boss, even though it was a bit bullet spongey from what we saw, as there will be adds to deal with. The mission we saw was a boss battle against a frog/lizard-looking enemy called a Jearbear.
Flying Wild Hog are aiming for five key features in Space Punks: Endless Arsenal – of both melee and ranged weapons Limitless Power – more loot and progression than you will ever need Share the Glory – Space Punks is best enjoyed in multiplayer Not Heroes – your playable characters aren’t famous space pirates, yet just regular folk trying to earn a living and Brilliant Galaxy – a lot of thought has gone into the setting, story and overall lore for Space Punks. Their abilities can be buffed by the others too: Duke for example works best when paired with Bob or Finn, receiving bonuses from teaming up with them and working in collaboration with their strengths and weaknesses.ĭuring a recent developer presentation, we got to actually see how Space Punks will play. They are: Duke – the handsome alpha male Eris – not the sort of person you want to double cross Finn – an anthropomorphic boar not unlike Pey’j from Beyond Good & Evil and finally Bob – the galaxy’s baddest bug.Įach character has unique abilities and will be better equipped in different situations. These can be new skins for characters, companions or new entrances when landing in a new zone and more.Īt launch, there will be four punks with whom you can “rip space a new one”. There will be microtransactions available along with battle passes when the game properly launches, but these will only ever include cosmetic items. Perhaps knowing they are entering an ever-filling market, Space Punks will be launching as a free-to-play title. We honestly can’t wait to try it.Don’t worry though, it is still entirely playable in solo play. An open beta is also planned for winter this year, while the game will release on consoles in 2022.

Space Punks will enter Early Access on PC on 14th July, so those keen to go hands-on with it won’t have to wait long. It seems to set the tone for the game perfectly. Flying Wild Hog is hoping that the gameworld itself also captures the imagination of players, with it designed to be living, breathing and ever-changing.
Visually, they all appear to be wonderfully designed and unique, too. It appears there will be four characters to choose from, each with their own special abilities.
Players will take on contracts across a range of far-flung planets in an effort to acquire fame and glory, because what other reason is there? And presumably, as they gear up, they’ll be able to take on tougher contracts that offer better rewards. And so Space Punks, currently in development by Flying Wild Hog, is very much our cup of tea, so to speak.Ī top-down looter-shooter, Space Punks aims to offer crazy, over-the-top action in an irreverent sci-fi setting. We love Diablo, and we also love Borderlands. Now, Space Punks appears to be taking Borderlands’ formula and turning it into a twin-stick shooter. Borderlands took the Diablo formula and turned it into a first-person shooter with lashings of humour.
